What do you recommend? I'm a novice when it comes to this sort of thing. Thanks again for your fast response (as usual).

I guess it really depends on what you want to do with the gun. What bullet weights are you planning on shooting? How far? What type of game?

I have my H&R Ultra slug Hunter for deer. I would probably use it for coyote...shots where I hunt are 0-150 yards. Although I wouldn't mind using it as a back-up deer rifle too. But for your sake, lets just say coyote for now.

Well, me personally, for coyotes I's opt for barrel stubbing and build it around a 1-20" twist rate barrel. I say this because of the lighter weight bullets and higher velocity, which translates into a flatter trajectory for your longer shots...

If money is a consideration, then I'd opt for an SB-2 in 357 magnum, rechamber it to 357 Maximum, do a trigger job, pillar/glass bed the forend and modify the base/barrel to the larger 8-40 screws...

At the very least, a rechamber job to get you started in the right direction....

Ok, thanks for all of the info, this sounds like a great gun for Michigan. After I send you my slug barrel to be accurized, I think it will be time for a MAX!

If I get an H&R 357 rifle, how much will it cost to get the trigger lightened up and rechambered in the MAX? Also, how much for a stub?
  -Thanks,
             Brandon

Brandon,

a trigger job is $75 and a rechamber to the 357 Maximum is $75...

To build a barrel stubbed 357 Maximum off your gun is $550....

OK new to this forum thanks to Dinny a fellow Hoosier.  I just picked up my Handi in 357 and looking to Max it.  I call H&R and they said a barrel swap could only be with a 44 magnum.  SB 1 or SB 2 ???  Any way I would like to max and have the barrel cut to 16.5.  I hunt in a wooded area and 75 yards would be a long shot.  Can I just send the barrel and do I need to remove the scope.   Any other recommendations ?

Denny,

welcome to the forum and God Bless.

The barrel needs to be completely stripped, scope base and all...

Yes, send just the barrel....

If H&R will ONLY swap out the 357 barrel with a 44 Rem Mag barrel, does that mean it might be an SB1 action?  I'm not saying it does, just asking.

Sounds like an SB1 frame to me, too, Jason
