David, or anyone else -
Do you think it's effective to shoot 158 grain bullets out of a 1:14 twist rate?

A 1-14" twist rate will accurately shoot some 158 gr. bullets. Only proper testing will determine that.

David,

In a 'perfect' world what would be the ideal weight for the 1-14 twist?

Steve,

welcome to the forum and God Bless.

In a perfect world, any bullet weight from 160 gr. to 200 gr. would be ideal in a rifle chambered for the 357 Maximum, with 180 gr. bullets being the optimum bullet weight.

Thanks, I've been lurking here for quite a while. I just had a Douglas XX 1-14 blank made into a 20 inch rifle barrel by MGM. It seems to prefer 180 gr Hornady SSP bullets. For some reason I haven't gotten any lead bullets (158's to 190's) to group with any acceptability yet but I guess that's half the fun going to the range trying to put a combo together that will put a smile on your face.
